The first thing you focus on when you wake up can have a powerful impact on your whole day. The best part? You get to choose what that thing is, every morning.
Forget waking up on the “wrong side of the bed,” this simple mindfulness practice will help you wake up on purpose. It only takes two minutes and gives you the opportunity to set your intention for the day ahead.
Step 1: Pause
When you wake up, immediately push the pause button. It can be tempting to jump into emails, voicemails, and social media—especially if you keep your smartphone by the bed, but resist the urge. That’s a great way to cause stress. Give yourself a moment of peace and spend these first two minutes of your day device free.
Step 2: Breathe
For the first 60 seconds, simply sit quietly and take a few slow, deep breaths. Focus on each one, breathing in through the nose and out through your mouth. This minute of focused breathing can help you feel centered and calm.
Step 3: Picture
For the last 60 seconds, focus on the day ahead. Instead of thinking about your to-do lists or meetings, picture the “purpose moments” where you might make a positive difference in your work, activities, or in someone else’s life. Envision how you can learn and contribute. Stay focused on that energy of positivity and possibility—now, get out of bed and live your day on purpose.
